The Supported Training & Employment Program (S.T.E.P.) is operated by Whispering Pines School, on behalf of Smith Community Mental Health. The S.T.E.P program is a year-round program designed to help youth with emotional or behavioral disorders transition successfully into adulthood. Aimed at individuals roughly ages 16–21, the program focuses on building employment readiness, educational attainment, social skills, and self-advocacy. During the summer break, students are provided with paid employment where they work side-by-side with a job coach, earning wages while developing practical, job-related skills in real work settings. Throughout the year, participants also receive support connecting to job opportunities, training, and community resources that promote independence and long-term success. As part of Smith’s broader youth and family services, S.T.E.P. helps young people develop the confidence, skills, and support networks needed to thrive in work, school, and their communities.
